[Background]

Everything there is to know about Homura Akemi

[Personality]

*WARNING: SPOILERS FOR END OF SERIES*

It’s hard to describe in words how Homura Akemi acts because she constantly changes within the series. We see her past as a clumsy, shy, and meek girl, her journey making her change to a cold demeanor to finally an accepting girl who decides for herself what kind of path she will take. So, I will be talking about who she was from the beginning and what she is like at the canon point I will be taking her from.

One thing to note about Homura Akemi is that she is really determined to accomplish her goal/wish. This is the main focus we see in the series as she tries to convince the title character, Madoka Kaname, not to make a contract with the alien called Kyuubey and become a magical girl(puella magi). Besides the obvious ‘Don’t listen to that little creep’ line she tells her over and over again, she takes it to another level by resetting time itself whenever Madoka gets killed or becomes a witch. While the audience sees five timelines, Kyuubey says that Homura’s been doing it countless times so the number is up in the air. When Madoka becomes a god in the final episode, Homura still carries the determination that she had despite the pink haired girl no longer being there in a physical sense by fighting for the world Madoka wanted to protect: no wish needed for that to happen.

In the past, Homura was shown as a meek and shy girl due to being in the hospital for half a year because of heart problems. Once she started to reset the timeline, she became the stronger individual that we see in episode 1. This is because she HAD to get stronger in order to fight the witches and keep the promise she made to Madoka: to stop her from making the contract and becoming a magical girl and transforming into the very thing they fight against. While she got stronger physically, she had to also get stronger mentally and she did it by becoming cold and unfeeling to those around her. To keep them at a distance but close enough to make sure her warnings were heard. Up until the final timeline, this mentality made her butt heads with the other magical girls like Mami, Kyouko, and Sayaka (the last one being the most vocal about her dislike for Homura). However, at the end of the series, she is seen working with Mami and Kyouko.

Connected with the previous, Homura at this point has learned to be accepting of others such as working with the other magical girls but the most we see is how she accepts Kyuubey in the end. Before this, she wanted to try and get rid of the little fuzzball because without him there, there will be no contracts to make and therefore no more magical girls to become witches. We see during the series that Homura constantly tries to shoot and succeeds in destroying his body several times but he pops right back up and do anything to keep Madoka from making the contract. It’s after Madoka becomes the emobodiment of hope for all puella magi and rewriting the system that Homura is alright with the little guy around her. Because now, instead of turning into witches, Madoka takes their corrupted soul gems and brings them to her plane of existence. So there’s really no reason why Homura should hate Kyuubey or the other girls that have stayed. She even tells Kyuubey that at one point, she didn’t like him but now she is seen fighting along with him against the demons.

Another thing about Homura is that once you make friends with her, you’re pretty much stuck with her. We see this in the first timeline when the first person that shows her any kindness is you guessed it: Madoka. The reason why she values this friendship more than anything is because Homura is used to being alone; we even see that she’s filling out the transfer papers to go to school on her own. But it’s Madoka she shows great respect for and amazing kindness. Her wish to Kyuubey was to even ‘protect Madoka’ after she was killed in battle. So the pink haired girl is basically Homura’s drive. Even with her gone now, she fights to protect the world that Madoka wanted.

Homura has grown from lovable moeblob and clumsy to determined and stoic to finally accepting and content with the world around her. In the beginning, she wanted to be like the same girls who saved her life and have friends who cared about her deeply such as Madoka, hence making the wish to protect the girl and giving her the ability to manipulate time. After resetting time over and over again, she takes on the role of a hardened veteran who warns Madoka and the other girls of the truth behind the contracts and wishes and the ultimate fate of all puella magi: the maturing into a witch. She puts up the front of a cold and aloof girl because she wants nothing to get in her way of fulfilling her promise and the wish that she made. One can say during episode ten when Homura takes out her braids and uses her soul gem to correct her vision sets the stage for the girl we see throughout the series. Then at the end, she no longer fights against the system and is content with the world Madoka wanted to protect. She finally shows emotion when she starts crying while holding the pink haired girl’s ribbons, breaking the ‘cold and aloof’ mask. Even if she and one other person remembers Madoka, it’s alright. This is the path she chose to walk and she’ll do the best that she can to uphold it. She no longer sees the other girls as ‘allies’ but friends and Kyuubey is something she doesn’t want to kill anymore.

So one can say that Homura has really shown growth during the series and it has made her for the better. While she doesn't completely see the world as perfect, she's content enough to keep going.

[Abilities]

Homura’s most known ability is time manipulation and it’s been used several times within the anime:

She can stop time for a certain period as seen when getting Kyoko out of Sayaka’s forming witch barrier. However, it hasn’t been stated how long she can keep it up but one can assume it can be for long periods of time: when Homura first starts out, she is seen stealing guns and other exploding materials from police stations and assuming military bases (grenades, machine guns and launchers is what she uses during the fight with Walpurgis Night).

When she is with someone, they must have physical contact with Homura in order to not be affected by her ability; the girl even states that if the other let go of her hand then she would be stuck until Homura restarts time.

Homura can also reset time given to a certain point; she can’t go ten years into the past nor can go forward in time. The most she can go is up to a month due to her wish of protecting Madoka which means every time she resets, it’s right before she meets the pink haired girl. Also, it's the most that the sand glass in her shield can produce.

Along with this, Homura can hide many weapons in the space in her shield. As mentioned before, she is seen using grenades, bazookas, machine guns as well as handguns and she pulls them from that exact spot.

It’s unsure if she still has this power at the end of the series as her shield is gone but it’s replaced with a bow in the style of Madoka’s, possibly because of the other girl’s wish or another thing to remind Homura that she did at once exist even if everyone else doesn’t remember in that timeline.

*NOTE: Due to the uncertainty of the above, Homura's time manipulation abilities (and Hammerspace holding) will be nulled in the game.*

She also has some general magic such as healing; she is shown healing her eyes in episode 10 using her soul gem but since it's not clarified, this will be nulled in Somarium.

There is another power Homura and the magical girls in her series can use: telepathy between themselves and the incubator, Kyuubey. It’s shown throughout that the girls can communicate such as Mami talking to Madoka and Sayaka across the school grounds.

*NOTE: This ability can only be used between puella magi from Homura’s universe so it’s more restricted and will be in the game as well unless others from her world are in Somarium. In other words: Homura can’t communicate with a sailor senshi or anyone else magical using this because it’ll be impossible to do.*

[Sample post]
[First Person]

[The dreamberry turns on but it wasn’t by the new owner, who was currently sitting in some kind of field. She looked no older than maybe thirteen but yet she had an air around her that made her seem much older and experienced. There was also the state of dress and the weapon in her hands: a bow which seemed odd given her age.]

Kyuubey, can you hear me? Where are you?

[As she speaks, she sounds calm. There was no need to make a panic after all; Homura had been through worse.]

Did the demons do this?

[She finally stands up and notices the device on the ground. The obvious thing to do was to pick it up and take a look, which the puella magi did. Now the network can see pale skin and a pair of purplish eyes locked in an expression of curiosity.]

This is a strange phone. I should try calling Mami-san and get any information from them.

[She starts dialing a number but there’s some kind of noise.]

The number doesn’t exist?!

[Her voice started to crack slightly but it wasn’t that noticeable.]

What is going on…Kyuubey! Where are you?! If this is your way of joking around, it’s no longer funny!

[And with that, the device shuts off.]

[Third Person]

Homura had thought she had seen it all by now.

Magic and so called miracles do exist but at what cost to the person wanting them?

When she first arrived in the world of Somarium, it was asinine to believe that a dream world could exist and that many other people were pulled into it by some higher power. A world driven by the power of dreams and nightmares…where a quaint little cottage village was smack dab in the middle of a bustling city followed by a floating mountain. Even Homura had trouble believing in that little tidbit of information. Hard for a girl who kept reliving a particular month over and over again but that was neither here nor there. Lost in her own thoughts, the puella magi had suddenly found herself in one of the fields.

“Hmm? I must’ve taken a wrong turn.”

Indeed she was right because there was a flock of scarecrows in the area: each one staring at Homura intently like she was a perfect target for their pecking needs. Before the events back home, she would most likely shoot the birds without warning. However, this time…she needed to run away. Why? The scarecrows are doing nothing but protecting their home and she accidentally stumbled upon it so there was no need to kill them for something like that. And she started moving her legs in the opposite direction, trying her best to head back into some familiar area of Somni where no birds like this would ever go near. That’s what she was hoping for anyway but one of the scarecrows did get rather close to her head, hoping to peck at it. But it did something else…

Homura could feel the ribbons slipping off her head…Madoka’s ribbons. Her precious gift from the now goddess was now in the mouth of a possible parasite infested bird.

The puella magi stops and turns around, glaring at the offending bird. “That’s not yours to take.”

With a flash, Homura had transformed and readied her bow up far enough that it would be a clean shot and fired once, the arrow sailing through the air and hit the scarecrow square in the chest. The others cawed in panic in started to fly off in different directions, clearly underestimating the girl’s ability to fight back. Or in this case, kill one of their own. Homura walked over to the dead scarecrow and plucked the ribbons out of its mouth and frowned.

“I told you that these are not yours to take. Now they need to be washed.”

[Why do you want to play this character in Somarium?] I think given the place she’s from, Somarium would make things interesting for Homura. Hopefully she would make some friends and open up a little bit in this type of setting.

[Which rule was your favorite and why?] Be nice to other players: it’s called being respectful kids.

[Where did you hear about Somarium?] A long time ago on LJ and I kinda lurked a bit.

[Any questions?] Contract? /人 ◕ ‿‿ ◕ 人\

Just kidding. I do have an actual one: what will happen with Homura’s soul gem? Because at the point I’m taking her, witches don’t exist but demons do. However, it’s not mentioned if puella magi have to use something the demons drop.
